Measures about 3 feet long by 2 feet tall. 1882 on the flag. Hand done ship of a Atlantic crossing. Very detailed pilgrims with movable limbs. Original Art Deco handles. About 6 inches deep. background painting is primitive. Waves are 3D. Glass has a crack in the front and needs replacing, not the original glass, not thick enough on the bottom. Frame is matte black and looks original, very plain. Chips to paint and dust inside in minimal for age. This goes in a wall pocket flush. Rigging and sails are all handmade and correct.
As seen on road show this is a homemade memoir of a long voyage made before the turn of the century.

The Takarabune was a phantom treasure ship of the Japanese. This was a gift to a long term employee from a Lieutenant-Governor of Canada, a designated official in Canada as a representative of the Queen. From the estate of the employee, this originates as a gift from the Japanese Embassy. Measures 10.5 inches tall and 9 inches long. Hand painted with an impressed Kutani mark on the bottom. Treasures on board are all gift wrapped and boxed. Traditional Kangi character for "treasure" on the sail. In beautiful original condition. In Japanese tradition and lore, the Takara-bune sails every year on New Years Day into port bringing good fortune to those who see it. No sailors have been seen abroad the ship which appears to be empty.
According to tradition, if a picture of the Takarubane is purchased on New Year`s Day and placed under the pillow it will bring good fortune. It is considered good luck as well as traditional.
According to the folklore attached to it, the cargoes carried by a Takara-bune are as follows ;
1) Hat of invisibility (Kakure-gasa); if one puts on this hat he can protect himself without being detected by a demon or evil spirit. 2) Lucky raincoat (Kakure-mino); to wear this raincoat serves as a safeguard from attack by an evil spirit. 3) Sacred Key; to open the treasure house of popular lore. 4) A never empty money purse. 5) Box filled with gold and silver (Senryo-bako) 6) Precious Jewel (Nyoi-hozyu); which fulfills every wish you make. 7) Scrolls (Makimono); an "open sesame" book. 8) Lucky Hammer (Uchide-no-kozuchi); which can produce every kind of valuable goods that one may wish for. 9) A gold weight (Hundo) 10) "Sippo"; represents precious things, such as coins. 11) Bales of Rice; symbolizes the bounty of foodstuffs.
Even today, people who respect ancient customs, put a miniature or a picture of Takara-bune under their pillow on the second night of the New Year, believing that it ensures they have pleasant dreams.
